Fogarty’s 2009 Chardonnay is a pretty wine laced with expressive, rich layers of nectarine, honeysuckle, mint and spices. The inherent structure and personality of the appellation comes through in spades. This entry-level offering is made partly from purchased fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.
I tasted a wide range of wines with Tommy Fogarty and associate winemaker Nathan Kandler, but found the Chardonnays and Pinots the most compelling. The Chardonnays are aged for 16-18 months in French oak, while the Pinots see shorter elevage of around 10 months. All of the wines I tasted are deeply expressive to site. The only problem will be finding them, given the small case productions. Nevertheless, these new releases, from one of Santa Cruz Mountains oldest wineries, are well worth seeking out.
