The 2010 Pinot Noir is quite pretty. Sweet dried cherries, anise, tobacco and spices waft from the glass. This is a bit ethereal and at times even frail, but the style works. Sweet floral notes from the partial use of whole clusters linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
I tasted a wide range of wines with Tommy Fogarty and associate winemaker Nathan Kandler, but found the Chardonnays and Pinots the most compelling. The Chardonnays are aged for 16-18 months in French oak, while the Pinots see shorter elevage of around 10 months. All of the wines I tasted are deeply expressive to site. The only problem will be finding them, given the small case productions. Nevertheless, these new releases, from one of Santa Cruz Mountains oldest wineries, are well worth seeking out.
