The four 1993s reviewed in this issue include three strikingly pretty dry wines, and one very sweet dessert-styled wine (the Marigny Moelleux). The 1993 Vouvray Demi-Sec Les Girardieres (from 40-year old vines) is a slightly off-dry wine with vibrantly high acidity, terrific purity and balance, and loads of honeyed, melony, and tropical fruit intermingled with a flinty, mineral-like character. It will provide delicious drinking over the next several years. This low-tech domaine, which primarily practices organic farming, combined with the use of indigenous yeasts from the vineyard for fermentation, has become one of the new darlings of the French press.
