Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Grenache has a nose of powdered sugar, sweet red cherries, red berry preserves, violet, blueberries and dusty earth with a savory undercurrent. Medium-bodied, it offers loads of ripe red berries flavors with chalky tannins and good freshness on the finish. 950 cases produced.

The 2016 Grenache has a medium garnet-purple color and nose of baked cherries, black raspberries and plum preserves with touches of Chinese five spice, cracked pepper and sautéed herbs. Big, full-bodied and plushly textured, the berry preserves and spice flavors deliver a full-throttle palate and long, pepper-laced finish.

A killer value is the 2013 Grenache. Made from 100% of the variety and brought up in neutral oak, this medium to full-bodied, silky, seamless and sexy 2013 has tons of ripe black raspberry, licorice, crushed flowers and toasted spice aromas and flavors. Pure, polished and hard to resist, drink it over the coming 4-5 years, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it hold for longer.

The 2012 Estate Grenache represents an excellent value and is an outstanding example of California Grenache. Incorporating 5% Syrah, completely destemmed, and aged 12 months in older French and American oak, it offers pretty raspberry, strawberry, crushed flowers, vanilla bean and sweet spice in a medium-bodied, silky and textured package. Enjoy it over the coming 3-5 years. This was a superb lineup from the team at Beckmen, and across the board these wines showed an uncommon level of polish and finesse. The least expensive Grenache and a very attractive bargain is the 2008 Estate Grenache. This displays more strawberry, red currant, and cherry notes, with some earth, lavender, and subtle herbaceousness. Dark ruby, medium-bodied, with nice texture, this is a wine to drink over the next 2-3 years. Two of the finest bargains year in and year out from California’s Central Coast are Beckman’s red Cuvee Le Bec and their more recent white, Le Bec Blanc. Both can probably be found for under $18 at discounters. I tasted four Syrahs from Beckman Vineyards, all of them meriting an outstanding score.
