The 2017 Pinot Noir Cuvée du Tonnelier comes from "the older, own-rooted Pommard clone vines planted in 1990, which I finished tearing out, sadly, this year," says Doug Tunnell. "But that is life." It was made with 25% whole clusters and was aged in about 30% new French oak. Pale ruby-purple in color, it's scented of warm cranberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries with nuances of tree bark, potpourri and tangerine peel. It’s light to medium-bodied and elegant with a gentle frame and long, refreshing finish. 346 cases produced.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Cuvee du Tonnelier has a pale ruby-purple color and youthfully subdued nose of underbrush, dried herbs and truffles with a core of cranberries, red currants and pomegranate, plus a waft of lavender. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has beautiful poise with a nice understated intensity and a good grip of tannins, finishing long and earthy.

The 2014 Cuvée du Tonnelier Pinot Noir is a barrel selection from a Pommard clone block matured in around 30% new oak. It has a very earthy, slightly stemmy bouquet that has a touch of green pepper underlying the well-defined red berry fruit. The palate is fresh and clean, peppery in the mouth with crisp, fine tannin, a keen line of acidity and a foursquare but fresh finish that is very satisfying. Not one for those seeking plenty of juicy fruit, but a classy wine for sure.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Cuvée du Tonnelier has an attractive, very pure bouquet with red cherries, raspberry and compelling mineral scents that surface with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grippy tannin, quite foursquare in the mouth while the finish is a little pinched, suggesting that another 12 months will benefit this wine. It is a very respectable Pinot Noir in what was a tricky vintage.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Cuvee du Tonnelier comes from the Ribbon Ridge AVA from the Pommard clone. The vines are now 22 years old and this vintage included 10 percent whole-cluster fruit and was matured in 35% new oak. Very pure in color, it has a generous, floral bouquet with quite precocious scents of redcurrant and cranberry fruit, rose petals and a puff of chalk dust. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. The acidity is very well judged with touches of marmalade infusing the pure red fruit with fig developing toward the refined finish. Gorgeous.
