The 2017 Chardonnay was aged a year in 20% new French oak barrels and an additional six months in stainless steel. It opens to aromas of toast and baklava—pistachio, honey and pastry—with notes of oats, Golden Delicious apple and baked quince. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and savory, lifted by citrusy accents and tangy acidity, finishing long, savory and textured. Yum!

Aromas of pear, pastry cream, subtle spice and blanched almonds introduce the lovely 2016 Chardonnay from Thomas Fogarty. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and flavorful and built around bright acids but also cut from more giving cloth than the more structured, taut vineyard-designate bottlings. The finish is long and pure. Enjoy this in its youth or for the better part of a decade.

The 2015 Chardonnay is excellent, revealing notes of fresh green apple, Anjou pear, lemon oil and subtle hazelnut cream. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, concentrated and powerful, with excellent depth and mouthwatering acids. At 14.5% natural alcohol, it's comparatively large-scaled by Fogarty's recent standards.

Coming all from estate vineyards and fermented and aged in French oak (it spends six months in tank prior to bottling), the 2014 Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains is a sexy, layered, classic Chardonnay that has lots of buttered apples, white flowers and a touch of white peach in a medium-bodied, forward, ready to go style. Drink it anytime over the coming 2-3 years.

A killer value that's just about as good as the single vineyard releases, Fogarty's 2013 Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains offers terrific stone fruits, citrus blossom, mineral and hints of toast to go with a medium-bodied, rich, textured and layered feel on the palate. It has the standard acid profile of the estate, yet it still has plenty of richness. There's 1,200 cases of this beauty made, and given the quality, it's a steel at 36 bucks.
