The 2005 Il Carbonaione (Sangiovese) is a soft, silky-textured version of this wine, with perfumed aromatics and a core of ripe red fruits. Today it comes across as lacking the stuffing of the finest vintages, but this is a wine that ages well, especially in fresh vintages, and I am confident that will be the case here as well. For now, the wine requires another year or two in bottle to absorb the toasted oak that is prominent at this stage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
Father and son team Jurij and Vittorio Fiore make wines of much distinction at their small winery. The property is located in the hills of Greve, right next to neighbors Querciabella. Their top wine is Il Carbonaione, a 100% Sangiovese (from the Lamole clone) aged predominantly in small French oak barrels which has a track record of aging very well, even in smaller vintages.
