Tasted at the La Romanée vertical, the 1911 La Romanée was bottled by Liger-Belair prior to the family selling off their holdings in 1933 and came from their own reserves. Alongside the ethereal 1915, this was a wondrous wine. Firstly, you notice the disarmingly clear colour - always a good omen. The bouquet entices you in with slightly darker fruit (yes...fruit) than the 1915, with a distant marine influence, cockles and sea spray, a touch of cola all with astonishing intensity. The palate is refined with perfectly judged acidity, poised with just a suggestion of rosewater toward a finish that just hangs in the air, like the final chord of a piano echoing around concert hall. Its length can only be described as otherworldly. Here is perfection mixed with profoundness in equal measure. Tasted June 2015.
