The 2006 Irpinia Aglianico Terra d’Eclano offers up dried flowers, raspberries, sage, rosemary and spices in a medium-bodied, firm style. Darker notes emerge in the glass, adding further weight and gravitas. Hints of mint add a touch of freshness on the finish. This sleek, harmonious red is a terrific effort from Quintodecimo and proprietor Luigi Moio, but it needs to be opened at least an hour in advance to allow the tannins to soften a touch. In 2006 Moio did not bottle his Taurasi. All of the best barrels were used for the Terra d’Eclano. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.
Consulting oenologist Luigi Moio is one of the most influential people in the viticultural landscape of southern Italy. In recent years, Moio has begun to garner significant attention for the wines he makes at his own property, Quintodecimo. These rich, textured whites and reds are quickly establishing themselves among the elite. Quintodecimo fans can look forward to a new single-vineyard Taurasi from the Cersito vineyard, a due south parcel on volcanic soils, which will be released in 2013.
