The 2007 Irpinia Aglianico Terra d'Eclano boasts gorgeous inner sweetness and perfume without abandoning a true expression of varietal character. Freshly cut roses, flowers, spices, ash, game and plums are just some of the nuances that flow from this pedigreed red. Ripe, silky tannins round out the textured, expressive finish. The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but there is no escaping the quality of what is in the glass. I especially like the fatness and richness of the fruit. This is a fabulous effort from Luigi Moio. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.
Luigi Moio continues to set a very high bar. His are some of the most fascinating wines to emerge from Campania, or Italy for that matter. Moio favors a rich, textured style that places his wines in more of a modernist vein, but make no mistake about it, these remain incredibly food-friendly wines that push the limits of what can be achieved with Campania's native varieties, but without losing sight of their roots. I am always thrilled when I see the wines pop up on restaurant wine lists.
